It’s probably no secret that quite often who you know is just as important as what you know. In the last few years hundreds of social networking sites have popped up across the net. So, who’s who of the world’s richest men. Well, apparently not even a $5.9 billion loss could topple Bill Gates as the richest man on the planet. Gates topped Forbes magazine’s rankings of the world’s richest billionaires for the eighth straight year, even though his net worth fell 10 percent from a year ago to $52.8 billion.
Gates remained comfortably ahead of Warren Buffett, who held the No. 2 spot with $35 billion, according to the 16th annual ranking released Thursday. It was a list most notable for its losers.
The number of billionaires dropped by 83 this year to 497 as recession and fallout from the terrorist attacks reduced their wealth. Among those missing from the list were AOL Time Warner (AOL) Chairman Steve Case, whose company’s stock has declined by about half since last year, and Gary Winnick, chairman of Global Crossing (GBLXQ), which filed for bankruptcy protection in January.

Because a new report shows that nearly one in five realtors has sold a home to an international client in the past year. This is according to new research by the National Association of Realtors®. International buyers purchasing homes in the US appears to be a growing trend.
Foreign buyers purchase homes across the United States, but 52 percent of sales in 2006 were concentrated in three states – Florida (26 percent), California (16 percent) and Texas (10 percent). The South attracted nearly half – 49 percent – of international buyers last year, while 31 percent purchased homes in the West.

While there really is no excuse at all for attending a networking event without business cards, people do it all the time. If you want to achieve effective global networking, business cards are an important tool. Excuses range from forgetfulness to new jobs and having left them in the car in the parking lot. If you tell people you forgot your cards, many will assume you are as lax in your business habits and you might lose opportunities. Even if you don’t have your new cards yet, you can easily produce a temporary supply on your computer. When you give them to people you can mention that they are temporary and offer to send them your new one when you have it. That, of course, is a built-in reason to contact people again! A business card is an essential networking tool. Make sure you have a supply with you at all times. I’ve had people contact me about jobs from a business card I handed out more than a year ago. You’ll never know when someone will need your services, or have an opportunity for you, but one thing is certain. If they don’t have your business card…they won’t be calling.

The first Who’s Who was published as a 250 page volume in 1849 and had no biographical content but only thirty-nine lists of ranks and appointments and the names of those holding them. These included the Royal Household, members of the House of Peers and House of Commons, judges, archbishops and British envoys abroad.
In 1897 a change of ownership brought about the biographical style that we have today. Bernard Shaw was the first Who’s Who nominee to answer the question “What is your favorite recreation?” It is so highly revered that Winston Churchill intervened during WW II to assure that Who’s Who’s made it to press.

Lately security industry leaders such as Sophos are working to protect social networkers. They are warning users of the dangers of allowing strangers to gain access to their online profiles. This comes following new research into the risks of identity and information theft occurring through social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook.
While these sites can help achieve effective global networking, recent research shows that 41 percent of users will share their personal information with a complete stranger. Information such as email address, date of birth and phone number are bits of information that ID thieves love to get their slimy hands on. Freely giving strangers access to this information greatly increases a person’s susceptibility to ID theft. While there are few documented cases of ID theft occurring from social networking sites, given their popularity it won’t be long before thieves are fully exploiting them. Protect yourself by limiting the amount of personal information you divulge to strangers. The bottom line – If you’re using social media to increase your effective global networking, do it without divulging too much information about yourself.
